This is it! The pinnacle of fly and light tackle fishing. Tarpon fishing is the " World Series"
of angling. There is nothing that compares to a hundred pound, prehistoric fish going
absolutely crazy when on the end of your line! Just seeing these awe- inspiring fish near
the boat is an incredible experience. To have a Tarpon cruising in a few feet of water, open
her mouth, eat the fly, and go airborne as you try to get the line on the reel, is divine.
Most of the time we will be fishing for
migrating Tarpon in shallow, crystal clear
water. The Tarpon will use the flats and
sand bars as a "highway" as they travel.
Our job is to position ourselves in the path
of these fish and be ready to present a fly
or crab. This type of Tarpon fishing is the
classic way to do it. There is simply
nothing like Tarpon fishing, but to truly
understand it, you have to get out and try
it.

Tarpon begin showing up in the Tampa
Bay area around the end of March, and
hang around until October. The main
Tarpon season is May, June, and first
part of July. The "tarpon faucet" is all
the way open at this time, and the fish
are flowing through. The beaches ,
passes, and flats are all filled with
Tarpon. They can be found all alone, or
in schools of 150 fish. Some will eat, and
some wont. There is no telling what can
happen, or what we will see on a day of
Tarpon fishing.
10 - 12wt fly rods with sink -tip or slow- sinking fly lines are
necessary to do battle with these big fish. I welcome you to
bring your own gear, but I have plenty of fly or spinning tackle
for my clients. I also have a large selection of custom tied flies
and leaders for Tarpon. Tarpon trips for May and June fill up
fast so please book early.
The type of Tarpon fishing I do is all sight
fishing. We spot the fish before
approaching and then making a cast. The
Tarpon are either rolling, busting bait as
they feed, or cruising in shallow water as
they make there migration. Tarpon are also
found laying still just below the surface with
their fins sticking out of the water; called
"laid up" fish. Or they might be in a "daisy
chain". An awesome sight to see, these
Tarpon are engaged in a spawning ritual
and are usually interested in other things,
but will still eat a well placed fly or crab.
Tarpon Charters are run from Sarasota up the coast to Homosassa. With some of the best
fishing in the Tampa Bay area. Tampa tarpon fishing is world class. The crystal clear flats
and white sandy beaches offer spectacular sight fishing for tarpon. Fly fishing Tampa for
these giants challenges more popular areas like the Florida Keys. There is limited pressure
early and late in the season (March, April, July, and August). Fly anglers will have shots at
hungry fish. During the Main season there are lots of fish to keep every tarpon fly fishing
enthusiast busy.
